Will strive hard to meet the aspirations of my people, says only woman municipal election winner

Muscat:The lone woman winner among the 126 candidates who contested the Municipal Council election for the third term in the Sultanate of Oman, Fayza bint Khalfan bin Abdullah Al Shamsi, from the Wilayat of Al Sunina in Al Buraimi Governorate, said: “God willing, I will try hard to fulfil the needs of the people of the wilayat.”

In an exclusive interview with Times of Oman, Fayza Al Shamsi said there were not many media campaigns for her candidacy, but her victory came from acquaintances and trust in the community.

Fayza Al Shamsi is a job-seeker and an economics graduate from the College of Economics and Political Science at Sultan Qaboos University. She has made various contributions in the health, educational and other fields.

She is also a member of the municipal affairs in the wilayat and previously worked as a journalist for Oman newspaper.
Al Shamsi stated that she received 68 votes out of a total of 232 votes.

It may be noted that the number of women candidates for the first period elections (2012-2016) reached 23, 4 of whom secured membership, and the number of women candidates for the second period (2016-2022) reached 23, 7 of whom secured membership.

As for the third period (2022-2027), 27 women ran for the elections, but just one woman got council membership.
